Nidahas in Sanskrit means freedom. The Nidahas Trophy was christened so, as a tribute to the years of Independence of Sri Lanka. It was first instated, and a tournament was organized to celebrate 50 years of Sri Lanka’s independence in the year 1998. It was played in the 50 over format between the host and India and New Zealand. India bagged the title by beating Sri Lanka in the finals.
Sri Lankan Cricket turns 70 this year, and the Nidahas Trophy 2018 is being organized to commemorate 70 years of independence for Sri Lanka. It is a memorable occasion and a milestone for Sri Lankan Cricket. As a gesture of goodwill and a testament to a shared history of independence and Cricket, Sri Lanka extended the invitation to participate in their celebrations to its neighbours – India and Bangladesh.
The tri-nation series will begin on the 6th of March between India and Sri Lanka in the T20 format. The teams will play each other twice before the top two will progress to the final to be held on 18th March.
